Central WI Housing Summit Inspires Creative Solutions for Housing Needs

Central Wisconsin – More than 100 community leaders, innovative builders, and community risk takers gathered for a dynamic, day-long housing summit focused on solving the region’s most pressing housing challenges.
The event brought together experts from across industries to share insights, spark collaboration, and develop actionable strategies to strengthen housing opportunities throughout Central Wisconsin, including the event sponsors: Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Association (WHEDA), Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), University of Wisconsin Office of Extension, Centergy, Inc., Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago, and Associated Bank.
Kayla Rombalksi, Community Education Coordinator with Extension Wood County, and Housing Summit Committee Member had this to say about the summit, “We intentionally brought together leaders, builders, and risk takers because solving housing challenges requires all perspectives. We were thrilled to see such great attendance and engagement today and are grateful to all the partners who made it happen. The conversations and connections made today are just the beginning of meaningful, lasting change in Central Wisconsin.”
The day began with networking and opening remarks before Kurt Paulsen, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, delivered a data-driven presentation on the state of the housing market. A native of Wausau, Paulsen provided key insights into local trends and challenges, helping set the stage for informed discussion and forward-thinking solutions. Updates from regional partners highlighted ongoing efforts and resources available to support housing initiatives.
Throughout the day, panel members and discussion groups emphasized empowering individuals and communities to take an active role in the solutions. Sessions like “From Dreamer to Developer” featured speakers including local housing entrepreneurs, encouraging attendees to explore small-scale development opportunities. Additional panels focused on financing strategies, workforce development, and innovative housing models, with contributions from financial organizations and non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity Wausau.
Interactive roundtable discussions tackled key topics including employer-supported housing, aging in place, and creative housing solutions, while breakout sessions provided practical tools for both developers and community leaders. The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging attendees to carry forward the momentum and collaborate on tangible next steps.
“This event showed what’s possible when people from different backgrounds come together with a shared purpose,” said Angel Laidlaw, CEO of Centergy. “There’s real energy and optimism around creating housing solutions that work for our communities.”
By fostering collaboration, sharing expertise, and empowering local action, the summit marked an important step toward building stronger, more resilient communities – one solution at a time.
